the story

An Ancient Yule is the logical sequel to Burnett Thompson’s previous offerings, American Rhapsody, Reformation: Age of Mayhem, Autumn in Yunnan 云南秋日, Shakespeare: My Love is as a Fever, Christmas in Vienna, Beauty's Rose and Creation: A Jazz Suite.

Each of these albums tells a story, a narrative that spans millennia rather than decades. New and borrowed compositions comprise the programs, including ancient music of Native Americans, Africans, Chinese, Arabs, Greeks, the Sephardic diaspora, and the Europeans.

An Ancient Yule revels in two millennia of music that celebrate Christmas. The earliest records we have include the music of composers Kassiani (720-780 A.D.), Romanos the Melodist (620-670 A.D.) and of course Hildegard of Bingen in the 11th century. It is of consequence to note that the texts survived from before the 11th century, but the melodies were passed down through oral tradition, first notated in western style in the 11th century.

Anyone who has followed the work of pianist/composer Burnett Thompson will know that the music will be a revelation, and will present the music in startlingly creative fashion. The cast of saxophonist Jon Irabagon, bassist Alex Blake and clarinetist Kiera Thompson ensures an experience at the most creative edges of the musical realm.
