Pianist Jiyeong Mun won the Geneva International Competition in Switzerland in 2014 and subsequently won the Busoni International Competition in Italy in 2015. Since then, she has gained a reputation as a young musician and pianist who receives the most attention through accompanied performances with Korean and international leading orchestras and through piano recitals on the world stage.

the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra (SJMO) return to Castleton for a performance of music of the legendary “King of Swing” Benny Goodman Sunday, Nov. 4, at 4 p.m. The concert will begin with a multimedia presentation by Dr. John Hasse which will provide insights into Goodman’s colorful life and career, visiting highlights through photos and video clips.

Dr. Hasse is the founder of the SJMO, and Curator of American Music at the Smithsonian.

Duke Ellington’s timeless Nutcracker Suite, fashioned after the Tchaikovsky masterpiece, returns to Castleton in Performance led by award winning composer/conductor Miho Hazama with her 16 piece Jazz Orchestra. Ms. Hazama and the ensemble will also present her own compositions that have attracted the attention of the international press. The Tokyo born composer ranks as one of New York’s most astounding young talents, lauded in Downbeat as one of “25 for the Future”. Her work with the New York Jazzharmonic and members of the New York City Ballet has placed her firmly on the world stage.

The Keyboard Charitable Trust’s mission is to help young pianists reduce the element of chance in building a professional musical career. For the most gifted, this means débuts in London, New York, Mexico, Berlin, Rome and other music capitals. Over the past twenty-five years, the Trust has presented well over 200 young international pianists, historic keyboard players and organists (aged 18-30) in concerts worldwide. With such notable musicians as the late Claudio Abbado and Alfred Brendel among its trustees, this formula has proved its worth.

Shannon Gunn and the Bullettes Jazz Orchestra are steeped in the tradition of the masters but forging ahead with a style all their own. An all-star, all-women jazz orchestra based out of the D.C. area, they are laid back but hard swinging, bringing all generations together to enjoy a dynamite performance. The Bullettes began as a “dream” of Shannon Gunn, trombone player and graduate of the George Mason University Masters in Jazz Studies program. Since their first CD release, the Bullettes have continued to wow audiences and perform swing, originals, and straight ahead jazz charts for audiences young and old.

Margaret treats them as real instruments, in keeping with the French avant-garde artist Marcel Duchamp’s statement, “poor tools require better skills.” She also fulfills her mentor John Cage’s long-standing conviction that one can make music on just about any object capable of producing sound. Argentina native JP Jofre has placed his own personal stamp on tango tradition, is frequently featured in the New York Times and has been a headliner in countless concerts throughout the U.S., Europe, South America, and Taiwan. JP is a regular at the Metropolitan Museum of Art performance series, at Spectrum, and with the New York City Ballet. He has appeared with numerous orchestras as featured performer, and has become a mainstay of the New York world music scene. JP Jofre plays the “AA” bandoneon by BandionFabrik Klingenthal.

Welcome to the Guitarists/songwriters Wayne Henderson & Helen White. Wayne Henderson is a National Heritage Award recipient honored as a luthier and renowned finger-style Appalachian guitar playing. Influenced by friends and neighbors, Doc Watson and EC Ball, Wayne has toured broadly in the U.S., Asia, Africa, and the Middle East showcasing his lightening fast, articulate playing. He's also a storyteller! Singer, fiddler, and tunesmith, Helen White has toured extensively with Wayne in the U.S. and Europe. Her compositions include works for theater and video projects and a Booklist honored recording for children. Russian concert pianist Sergey Tukachev is a veteran of several competitions and is currently a masters student at the Central Music Academy in Moscow. Mr. Tukachev won First Prize for both solo and chamber music in the ‘21st Century Art’ competition in 2013 in Vorzel, Ukraine won diplomas in 2009 and 2012 in the ‘Put k Masterstvu’ Competition in Moscow. In 2014 he won a special prize for performance of works by Liszt at the Third Verona International Piano Competition. Tukachev has given numerous concerts in Moscow where he currently resides. Mr. Tukachev is presented by the Keyboard Charitable Trust.

World percussion/multimedia artist Tom Teasley draws on his extensive tours of Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Jerusalem, New Zealand, Samoa and South America. In this solo performance Tom will combine instruments from all over the world ,interchanging instruments and techniques. Ancient instruments and cutting edge electronics allow him to create virtual ensembles. Tom includes excerpts from his multimedia project, "Sounds You Can SEE" combining his compositions with original video art and existing video by Dadaist masters, Viking Eggling, and Hans Richter. Composed by Burnett Thompson, this work will be sung in Mandarin and English with surtitles. Le Zhang will be assisted by the Burnett Thompson Jazz Quintet and erhu soloist Jin Ruo Wei.
